DOG goes dormant

We had a few great years, where we reached out to hundreds of people in person, and countless others online. Our events at Siggraph, GDC, and online, were an excellent opportunity to share the wonders of the demo scene with many people who've come to cherish it in the same way we all do.

The Demoscene Outreach Group has many volunteers to thank for their efforts, and most of all the dedicated artists, programmers, and musicians who create demos.

All the best to you, and keep on inspiring!

-Vincent Scheib

Demo in Siggraph's Animation Festival

This was the first year the Siggraph Animation Festival accepted a scene demo. Specifically it was shown in the Animation Theaters, which roll film constantly throughout the week.

Although I can speak for only the one presentation I attended; the piece was well received and applauded! The demo was preceded with text explaining that it runs on current day PC hardware in realtime.

The piece is ".poem to a horse" by farb-rausch

Listed on siggraph's page:

Congrats to them. The Animation Festival has become a very prestigious venue for computer animation, and it is long past time for realtime art to be included as well.

Seeing a scene demo presented in the normal course of siggraph is rewarding. This was the primary goal for the founding of the Demoscene Outreach Group several years ago. Since then we have made presentations ourselves, but the goal has always been to open the door to demos entering the main events.

Thank you everyone who helped, and of course all honor to the master's of inspiration, the demo makers.

Demos at the Game Developers Conference Theater

This year GDC changed a little, and we think for the better. In past years we have made a single presentation of demos during lunch. This year GDC hosted an ongoing theater. We compiled a mix of demos that were repeatedly shown throughout the conference.

Popcorn also available :)

Demos of the year remix

We are planning a 5 minute, high impact, video for the Siggraph Computer Animation Festival. We will include portions of the best demos from the last year, with original music, in a creative edit. The focus will be to "illustrate the origin of [the] work through narrated explanations or other informational devices."

A talented video-editor is required -- do you have the skills? We're looking for an aggressive edit that complements the content of the demos.

SIGGRAPH 2002 Computer Animation Festivial

Our events last year at SIGGRAPH were extremely productive, with many thanks to Phillip Taylor and Vincent Scheib for getting the SIGGRAPH Computer Animation Festival Chair to create a 'real-time' category. This sets the stage for demos to complete apple for apple in arguably the worlds premier computer animation festival. To do this, we need the best, both artistically and technically impressive demos of the past year or two to be submitted before the 6th of March. We understand that many scener's are students, and unable to convert their intros/demos into NTSC VHS format, thus we will help with the process.

However please contact us dog@scene.orgas soon as possible if you would like the Demoscene Outreach group to help with your submission - the dead line is fast approaching!

The DemoScene, an Introduction
Hosted by Vincent Scheib

This session will introduce you to the underground movement known as 'the scene', or 'demoscene'.

Incredible feats of programming, insane file size limitations, music which gets you moving and style like you've never seen before. Sound interesting? For more than a decade, a group of underground computer hobbyists has been creating productions that push the boundaries of technology. It's about fusing technology, art and music into non-interactive, real-time animations as part of a new form of expression: Real-time Art. Imagine game development with complete creative freedom and no schedules. What are your limitations? How much art, code and music can fit into 64KB? What is possible with today's computer graphics hardware?

See the best demos of the year on a massive screen and thumping sound system. You will be surprised at what the demoscene has produced.

Friday, March 23

Gamasutra Article

The game developer site Gamasutra has posted an article by Vincent Scheib on: An Introduction to Demos & The Demo Scene

"Demos are cool. They exist to move you, just as any other art form moves you. But demos are built by programmers, artists, and composers who live and breathe technology. I'm describing a scene demo, which is not a demo of a game; it is a demonstration of programming, art, and music talent. A scene demo is a non-interactive executable that presents real-time music and graphics. Demos are created by young programmers and artists who are mostly located in Western Europe. They gather at hundreds of ‘demo parties’ a year, where competitions for demos are held."
